Chapter 14

Kari

“Hey, we need a soundtrack for our super-heroine adventure.” Kari nodded at the radio but kept both hands on the wheel as she turned a corner, leaving the downtown area for more residential streets.

“On it!” Kasi turned up the volume knob. “What do ya' think, a little classic seventies rock, Charlie's Angels style?” She made her fingers into a gun shape.

Kari giggled, “Nah, there's only two of us. And besides, we don't need a Charlie to tell us what to do!”

“Alright then, Buffy and Willow! A little more modern and still a classic, unbeatable duo.”

“Now you're talking!”

Kasi clicked through the preset buttons, skimming across a few commercials before hitting a station that was playing one of the late Harry Jones's dance tunes.

“Yes!” Kasi raised her hands and started dancing from the waist up in her seat. Kari just bobbed her head as she kept her eyes on the road and started singing along.

The peppy music took Kari's mind off all the troubles of Mills Township. It even seemed to lift the little aches in her body from working hard and being on her feet all day as she moved her shoulders to the tune and tapped her left foot to the beat.

She looked around at the passing landscape in the afternoon light, the fall leaves lit up in gold and copper by the autumn sun as it was beginning to near the horizon. The houses too looked precious with their weathered wood siding or brickwork with white trim. The huge Red Oak and graceful Maple trees lining the street swayed in the wind as if they were dancing to the music too.

But then the dance beat dropped off and a new song came on, this one a much slower melody on piano.

“Aww, buzz kill.” Kasi started to reach for the radio buttons again, but Kari shooed her away with one hand.

“No, no, I like that song! It's Coldplay.” She started to sing as her sister tilted her head and smiled at her.

Kasi rolled her eyes. “This is so you and Hunter right now.”

Kari gaped at her in mock affront. “Stay out of my head, that's why I like it. And you say that like it's a bad thing. I thought you liked a good love song as much as me?”

“Really? All these lyrics about running in circles and what not? That's you guys to a tee. You just can't get together already!”

“Nobody said it was easy!” Kari sang along in answer.

“Yeah, but nobody said it had to be this hard. You've got it bad for that boy, but you won't take it to the next level.”

Kasi tried to dodge as Kari punched her in the shoulder, but she couldn't move far enough in the car seat.

“Hey, I think Hunter and I are in a really good place. We've hung out a few times and had a lot of fun. I can't think of anything negative that's happened between us. Well, except for the murder cases that keep interrupting.” This time Kari rolled her eyes.
